Hot Reads from the Library


Public Lending Remuneration (PLR) is the mechanism for authors to receive payment under PLR legislation for the loans of their books by public libraries in Ireland. PLR is administered in Ireland by An Chomhairle Leabharlanna (The Library Council). Under PLR, a payment is made to registered authors in respect of registered books loaned by public library authorities. From these statistics Kilkenny Library Service knows the most loaned books for each month. The latest statistics available are for the month of December 2009. Top of the list of adult loans is The House at Riverton by Kate Morton, folowed closely by Happy Ever After? by Patricia Scanlan. The ever popular Danielle Steel is next most popular with her title A Good Woman. James Patterson,'s Cross Country, Tess Gerritsen's The Bone Garden and Colum Toibin's Brooklyn also feature. Popular Irish Chef, Rachel Allenhas written a cookbook called Rachel's Food for Living and it has been a big hit for her. Children's authors scoring well are Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Ice Man by Michael Smith is second on the list. Francesca Simon features often with Horrid Henry and the Mega-mean Time Machine, Horrid Henry strikes it Rich, and Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman. J.K. Rowling also features with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows .

The Book Buff vrs the Movie Buff

Recent movies based on books include The Lovely Bones, The Time Traveller's Wife, Angels and Demons and Confessions of a Shopaholic. All books are available at your local library. The Men who stare at Goats by Jon Ronson and The Road by Cormac McCarthy have also been filmed and are in cinemas this year.

Loughboy

Getting Started is a computer skills programme run by Age Action Ireland in Loughboy. It is for older people to help them gain confidence and basic skills in internet use. Training is provided by volunteer tutors in small classes, with an emphasis on encouragement and support for older learners. Courses are offered for a nominal charge of €20 for 6 weeks, with a 2-hour class each week.
The course is suitable for people over 55 who have not used a computer before or whose basic skills may have lapsed. It will cover keyboard and mouse skills and will introduce Internet, email and simple online transactions.
Classes start on Wed 3rd February 11am - 1pm and continue every Wednesday for six weeks. For more information phone 056 7794176 Loughboy Library.

Castlecomer


Exhibitions continue to be an important part of the serviceand this week there is a display of posters from The Irish Wildlife Trust on view.

The Fas E-learning Computer Classes have resumed. To book a place on this FREE Course, which is open to anyone, phone the library at 4440561 for details.

Claire Muldowney will give a free lecture on Emotional Freedom Technigue, a technique used to treat pain and stress. It takes place on Thursday February 18th at 10.30.Call in or ring the library to book a place.

Thursday activities continue with knitting group meeting at 10am and Toddlers (with parent/guardian) meeting at 11.30am. All welcome to join both groups.

Thomastown Opening Times 26th January to 6th March

The library will open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at the usual opening times during this period. It will not open on Thursdays or Fridays. We apologise for this curtailment of service but it is unavoidable due to staff shortages.
