What is the collective noun for a Gathering of Book Clubs?
I don’t have the answer either even though I have poured over Google but perhaps I might discover it tonight in Loughboy Library. To celebrate National Reading Group Day, Kilkenny Library Service will host an evening for book clubs and solo readers at 8pm tonight Wednesday 6th July in Loughboy Library.
Best-selling author Mary Stanley will be the guest speaker on the evening. Mary was born in London and raised in Dublin within a world of books-in fact her grandfather started Ireland’s first mobile library service.
Her first book “Retreat” was published in 2001 and this was followed by many more including “Searching for Home” and “The Umbrella Tree”. She is an avid supporter of the National Adult Literacy programme and she also writes for the Irish Daily Mail and is a regular guest on a variety of radio programmes.
Book club members and solo readers are welcome to this event. It will provide an opportunity to share favourite reads with book lovers from around the county and to discover new popular authors. Kilkenny County Library actively supports its book clubs in Loughboy, Castlecomer, Urlingford and Graiguenamanagh..
Meetings take place on a monthly basis and new members are always welcome- please check your local library for details.
Light refreshments will be served and all are welcome to this FREE event. €20 book token will be awarded to the best suggestion on the night for the collective noun for a “gathering of book clubs”.

Circus Stars The Summer Reading Challenge
Kilkenny Library Service is running the 2011 Summer Reading Challenge in all Kilkenny libraries this summer. It is called Circus Stars and the theme is based on the circus.
The Challenge will run for 7 weeks starting on 4th July and finishing on 19th August. The challenge is to read at least 6 books during this time. All the books must be borrowed from the library. Children will receive a 3D cardboard circus to start and as they read, they will receive incentives based on the circus theme. A certificate and medal will be awarded to each child who successfully completes the challenge.
This year the challenge also extends to families of participating children. The challenge for the family is also to read 6 books within the time frame. Books must be borrowed from the library. There will be a draw for book tokens among families who complete the challenge.
Children and those not in full-time employment are free to join the library and there is no charge to take part in this event.

Readingsfrom Original Sins at City Library 29th June.
A selection of authors from the newly published short story anthology entitled Original Sins read excerpts of their work in Kilkenny City library recently. This anthology, published by Maynooth University, is a sampling of 3 years work from students attending the very popular Creative Writing for Publication Course held in the NUIM Kilkenny campus at St. Kieran’s College.
The writers on this course were taught by highly respected authors John Mac Kenna and Suzanne Power.
“The stories were brilliant and it proves that if people are encouraged to write in their natural voice they will produce something unique, “says Suzanne. MC for the night was Mark Turner, one of the contributors, who was very witty. The night was entertaining in relaxed and comfortable surroundings. The authors told of their journey on this course and how they had developed confidence in their writing and even survived “peer consideration” sessions so that reading in public became a doddle.
It is worth mentioning that two of the authors in the anthology were shortlisted for this year’s Frances MacManus Short Story competition on RTE Radio One, such is the calibre of writing in this collection. Copies of the book are available in the libraries.
Calling all young artists in Callan!
Would you like to add your drawing to a new mural in the children’s section of Callan library? The mural will be drawn by local illustrator Bernie McAuley and she is inviting children in the Callan area to send her drawings of 2 new characters. They will be called Little Miss Bookworm or Mr. Bookworm and they will be based on the series of books by Roger Hargreaves. The mural will show lots of characters from children’s books and will also include these 2 characters. The drawings of Little Miss Bookworm and Mr. Bookworm must be on separate A4 size white paper and sent to Callan Library by 9th July. Children can enter drawings of both characters if they wish. The artists of the chosen characters will be invited to join Bernie for a short time during the summer when they will include their character on the mural. Children must be under 14 years to enter.
