New Year resolutions are overrated. Try September resolutions…Join the library for great winter enjoyment.
Membership of the library is open to everyone. Most are free of charge. The only group of people who have to pay an annual fee are those in full-time employment. The fee is €15 p.a.
Adults may borrow up to 8 items and children may borrow up to 6 items. The loan period is three weeks at a time.
There are libraries in John’s Quay and Loughboy in the City and in Callan, Graiguenamanagh, Thomastown, Urlingford and Castlecomer. The rest of the county is serviced by a mobile library that stops at over 60 places. The Schools’ Service operates from Library HQ, in Kilkenny. Circus Stars
The Summer Reading Challenge for families is over. Those who took part are now asked to return their registration cards to the library by 6th September. Those who return their completed cards will be invited to the celebrations in mid September. Reading medals and Certificates and more… will be distributed at the event. Cards may be sent to SRC, Kilkenny Library HQ., John’s Green House, John’s Green, Kilkenny. Last date 6th September.

Urlingford
The library is open at the following times: Tuesday 10am – 8pm, Wed. and Thurs. 10am – 5pm, Fri. 10am – 1pm and Sat. 10am – 1.30pm. Now that the children are back at school what better time to get back into reading some of your favourite authors and maybe trying some new ones. Urlingford Library has a great variety of new books for all ages and interest. We have books recommended by other readers for those who don’t have the time to search the shelves themselves!! The Knitting Group will start on Thursday 1st Sept. 10am-12pm. Call in and do some knitting and have a cuppa. Who knows, you might even knit some presents for family or friends for that wonderful time of the year that we won’t mention yet!!! New members welcome at any time. Knitting books with patterns for all ages are available in the library.
Loughboy
A photographic exhibition to celebrate the upcoming opening of the new extension at Drakelands House Nursing Home will be held at Loughboy Library from August 30th to September 13th.
The Library Bookclub resumes its monthly meetings on Thursday 1st September @10.30am. Over the summer break they have read “Cost” by Roxanna Robinson & “The Ninth Wife” by Amy Stolls. New and regular members are asked to come along and see what they thought of them. New members are welcome at any time.
City Library, John’s Quay
During heritage Week, the City library held the following talks:
The History of the Munster Express over 150 years- Kieran Walsh . An intimate crowd gathered to hear current Editor, Kieran Walsh talk about tales of Waterford and the surrounding areas and also his family’s historic background in publishing and the challenges they faced throughout their 150 years. All in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the talk, and many purchased Kieran’s book “Waterford Memories: 150 years with the Munster Express”.
If Maps could Speak – Richard Kirwan A large crowd of all ages and from all walks of life gathered to hear Richard Kirwan, former Director of Ordinance Survey Ireland give a very engaging & informative talk combining memoir, history and stories about Ireland's early map makers and their challenges and achievements in Pre-Famine Ireland. He also discussed how they developed today's Ordinance Survey maps and the importance of the role of digitisation. He travelled the country in his early days working for the OSI and had many interesting anecdotes to tell from these times. The audience were extremely interested in the topics he covered and had many questions for him.
Kilkenny Library Service and the Arts festival.
Kilkenny Library Service was invited to supply literature to support one of the exhibitions held during KAF 2011. Modified Expression was an exhibition of artists whose work is inspired by the written word or by the binding and recycling of books and paper. These artists were asked to respond to the work of the authors participating in the literature strand of the festival. Visiting authors included Belinda McKeon, Gerard Smyth, Paul Muldoon, Tobias Wolff, Michael Longley.
