For those interested in fish and fishing, Joe Dunphy will give a talk (on 27th Oct)  entitled Something Fishy to children from local schools in Urlingford and Castlecomer. Although he won’t actually be bringing some fish, he will have fishing rods and enthusiasm by the bucket load!! His talk covers a variety of aspects connected with fishing, maybe even the fish’s viewpoint on fishing!!

The year of Craft was celebrated during the Children’s Book Festival when the Library Service and the  National Craft Gallery got  together for a papercraft workshop with the 4th , 5th and 6th classes from the Presentation Convent, Parnell Street. Caroline Ryan facilitated the workshop which centred around a poem the children had read. The children received a tour of the Gallery from Sinead Quinn, Education and Outreach Assistant who explained the exhibition “Modified Expressions” to them. The children then made their own version of the exhibition by interpreting their poem in papercraft. This was the first time most of the children had been to the Gallery but not the last judging by their enthusiasm.

Visits by children’s authors during October

On 6th October 3 classes from Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal attended a visit by popular children’s author Benji Bennett in Graiguenamanagh.   The colourful author enthralled his audience of 90 children with stories of his character Adam and his amazing adventures. A great time was had by all.

13th October, saw the visit of Ireland’s best known children’s author Marita Conlon McKenna to Loughboy. Over 160 children from 4 local schools packed the library. The children were well versed in Marita’s books and after Marita had spoken to them about her writing, the questions to the author came fast and furious. Under the Hawthorn Tree, Marita’s book on the famine, was filmed  by Young Irish Filmmakers of Kilkenny and the children returned to class armed with a DVD of it for enjoyment and discussion. This DVD will be available to all borrowers in the future.

On Friday 14th Oct @ 8pm Graiguenamanagh Historical Society  unveiled an Exhibition of Artefacts which belonged to the Graiguenamanagh Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernia  in Graiguenamanagh Library.

Local historian John Joyce gave a talk on the night and the audience of 50 people were delighted with the local knowledge and items on display.

Of special interest in the Exhibition are the ceremonial sashes, certificate of membership and the minute book which recorded the regular meetings held during that period. Over 200 names of members are also on display.

The Historical Society came into possession of these Artefacts and Regalia in recent times which brought back memories of a society long forgotten that existed in Graiguenamanagh during the turbulent years of early last century. This exhibition is on permanent display in the library for all to see.
