Castlecomer Book Clubs
Pageturners Reading Group was formed in 2003 by staff member Mary Morrissey. Since then this group has grown in numbers to approx 20, and there is a waiting list to join.
- The members meet in the Lyrath House Hotel on the last Thursday of each month at 8.30pm for 2 hours.
- There are usually about 15 members in attendance.
- Over the years, the group has read a varied selection of books, including memoirs, travelogues as well as fiction.
- Sometimes the group ties in a novel with a film for discussion and comparison. We like to attend Plays, Book Festivals and Literary events.
- The members are commited Library users, and most are voracious readers, always on the lookout for a great read to share with the group
- The monthly meetings include lively discussion and debate, and we try not to veer too far from the book itself!
- The member who decides on the book, chairs that meeting.
The Afternoon Book Club was formed in 2011 for people who were free during the daytime. So far there are 8 members and new members would be most welcome.
- The members meet on the last Wednesday of each month in Castlecomer Library’s Meeting Room at 2.30pm.
- The meetings last an hour and a half, over a cup of tea.
- Library Staff have so far been recommending titles, and web sites with helpful reading lists.
- The group is very enthusiastic, and is looking forward to expanding its numbers, and attending Literary events together.

“Let the Great world spin” by Colm McCann, a story set against the backdrop of a day in the Life of New York, when Philippe Petitt walks a wire between the Twin Towers. The story is a series of interconnected lives shared on this day.
“The Help” by Kathryn Stockett is a debut novel set in the Missippi of the 1960’s. The theme is the indomitable will of human beings to survive against all odds - because of the color of their skin.
“The Governor” by John Lonergan, governor of Mountjoy Prison. The
book describes his life as he rises through the ranks of the Irish Prison Service, and the changes and that have occurred throughout the years. His humanity shines throughout.
“Love in a cold Climate” by Nancy Mitford. Describing aristocratic England between the wars when snobbery was an art form and women lived lives of pampered indolence, marked by balls and formal calls.
“A fine Balance” by Rohinton Minstry. India is the setting of this novel, and the author meshes people of diverse backgrounds into a bond that lasts a lifetime. This is truly a breathtaking novel, and gave the group plenty to ponder on.
“The Gapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck. A profound description of migrant workers trying to survive in 1930’s America, their travails and suffering. This book prompted much thought and conversation.
